Whether you are working on your debt snowball, emergency fund, or long-term saving and investing goals, it always helps to have a bigger shovel (income) to fill the gaps. This installment contains strategies 6-10 to help yourself get where you want to go.
6. Seek feedback and act on it: Request regular performance feedback from your manager or colleagues and be open to constructive criticism. Use this feedback to improve your work and demonstrate your commitment to personal growth.
Ashton’s Add-On: Although it is much easier said than done, try not to take it personally if a manager discusses areas for potential growth. Show your motivation by rolling your sleeves up and making adjustments when called for. During the next review, ask your supervisor(s) if they could provide further feedback in the areas you’ve worked so hard to grow stronger in. 7. Be a problem-solver: Identify challenges within your company and propose solutions that add value to the organization. By being proactive in addressing issues, you'll establish yourself as a resourceful and innovative employee.
Ashton’s Add-On: In addition to displaying your ability to handle complex tasks, be quick to give credit and praise to colleagues who are also setting the bar high. You will most certainly be noticed for having an unselfish, team-first approach. 8. Maintain a positive attitude: Stay enthusiastic and motivated, even in challenging situations. Your attitude can significantly influence how others perceive you and can be a deciding factor in whether you're considered for a promotion.
Ashton’s Add-On:
It is amazing what a smile can do! Also, if someone on your team is having a rough day, don’t feed into drama or add fuel to the fire by venting your frustrations. Simply provide a listening ear, show empathy, and bring positive energy during a colleague's difficult times.
9. Track your accomplishments: Keep a record of your achievements, big and small, and their impact on the company. This information will be valuable when discussing a promotion with your manager or during performance reviews.
Ashton’s Add-On: An electronic portfolio consisting of project highlights, certifications, letters of recommendation, etc. will allow you to routinely update your resume and quickly prepare for any application or interview process. Positions will open up, and you will be ready! 10. Be patient and persistent: Climbing the corporate ladder takes time and dedication. Stay focused on your goals, continuously improve your skills, and remain patient as you work towards your desired promotion.
Ashton’s Add-On:
To avoid becoming obsessed with something that is not completely up to you, find other passions beyond the workplace to provide balance in your life. Church activities, family time, hobbies, and exercise are some outlets that can help you maintain sanity and find perspective. By implementing these tips and maintaining a strong work ethic, you'll increase your chances of being recognized and rewarded with a promotion. After you accomplish this milestone, challenge yourself to avoid lifestyle creep. Instead, try to use the extra income from your new gig to pay off any remaining consumer debt first, boost your emergency fund, then saving/investing to set your family up for generational wealth!
