Whether you are working on your debt snowball, emergency fund, or long-term saving and investing goals, it always helps to have a bigger shovel (income) to fill the gaps. This quick read is the first five of ten strategies to help yourself get where you want to go.

Part 2 will come later this week :)

1. Set clear goals: Determine the specific position you want to be promoted to and establish a timeline for achieving this. Knowing your goals will help you focus your efforts and demonstrate ambition to your employer.

Ashton’s Add-On: Sometimes promotions come quickly, while others seem like they will never happen. You can only control you, and every day is another chance to prove yourself. Don't stop believing! 2. Develop your skills: Identify the key skills and qualifications required at the next level and invest some time in professional development. Attend relevant workshops, take online courses, or earn certifications to enhance your expertise and increase your value to the company.

Ashton’s Add-On: This is spot-on! The more skills you acquire, the more appealing you become to potential employers. Being able to share specific examples of your accomplishments during interviews is also key! 3. Take on new responsibilities: Volunteer for challenging projects or tasks that showcase your abilities and willingness to grow. This demonstrates initiative and commitment to your employer, positioning you as a valuable team member.

Ashton’s Add-On: When you step up to the plate, you are separating yourself from others who will do only the bare minimum. Initiative is one of the most valuable character traits employers are seeking. 4. Communicate your aspirations: Share your ambitions with your manager and ask for guidance on how to reach your goals. Regularly update them on your progress and accomplishments, showing that you're actively working towards a promotion.

Ashton’s Add-On: If opportunities arise outside your current company, be honest with your supervisor(s) and inform them if you are looking elsewhere. You never want to burn a bridge, and being professional during this process may help you in the form of a glowing recommendation or even an internal promotion so they can keep you. 5. Cultivate relationships: Building strong relationships with colleagues and superiors can be essential in securing a promotion. Network within your company, attend company events, and engage with your coworkers to create a supportive professional environment.

Ashton’s Add-On: A former supervisor once told me “Teamwork makes the dream work!” The number one goal is always to do what's best for the team. Whether you are the lead or play a smaller role on a project, be gracious, humble, and communicative. Yes, you need to have talent and skills, but playing nice in the sandbox is vital for anyone wishing to move up.
